AdSense Blog Project – Part 1

This is the first post in what I hope to be a series of posts about a new way that I am attempting to make money online using Google AdSense. Over the past month one of my main sites has started to get a nice amount of traffic, and the AdSense ads I have on it are really paying off well. This got me motivated to make a site that was based around AdSense, and AdSense only.

My goal is to have a content rich site that provides basic information about a certain niche. Hopefully the site will be picked up by search engines, and people will browse to it and click on the ads.

Here’s the steps I’ve taken so far:

1. Find a Niche

I wanted to do something “holiday” related, so I decided to focus on turkey, deep fried turkey to be exact. Deep frying a turkey is a popular hobby among many people, and it has a decent amount of content associated to it that I could use for my site.

2. Research Niche

I used the Google Keyword Tool to dig into this niche idea and find a good website/keyword combination.

Turkey

Based on the results I found, I chose to make a site focused on deep turkey fryers.

I surfed over to Go Daddy.com, and got lucky. The domain www.deepturkeyfryers.com was available.

3. Make a Niche Focused Blog

I created a blog about deep turkey fryers using Wordpress and a template I modified. For now, I’ve added a basic information post and 2 product review pages. All of these pages are outfitted with AdSense ads.

I placed the AdSense ads at the tops of all my posts because users have a higher likelihood of clicking on them when they are in this position.

My goal is to have around 10 pages of focused content, each with around 500-700 words.

Here is the site so far: www.deepturkeyfryers.com

4. Work on Backlinks

In order to get my blog some attention, I wrote an article about turkey fryers for EZine Articles which includes a link to my blog, and also placed comments on related blogs with a link back.

As of today, my blog just got indexed with Google, so now its time to write more content and get more backlinks. Check back next week, and I’ll give you an update on the site’s progress.

Today’s Niche Idea: Bladeless Electric Fans

As I was reading through the news online today I came across an article discussing a brand new product being produced by Dyson. This is the same company that creates high efficiency vacuum cleaners.

Their new product though is the only one of its kind, and could very well become immensely popular. Taking advantage of it now, could result in a great future revenue because competition does not really exist for it yet.

The Product: Bladeless Electric Fan

Dyson bladeless fan

The image above is of the new Dyson Bladeless Fan that will be available for sale this week in the United States and Australia. It’s revolutionary design eliminates the needs for blades by utilizing jets of air and a process of inducement. It is more efficient than standard blade fans, and provides a constant flow of cooling air.

You can read more about it here.

Recommended approach:

  • Pick up a domain name with the keywords “bladeless fans” in it
  • If it is not available you can work in terms like “Reviews”, “Store” or “Info”
  • Make this site a blog platform that provides information about this product
  • Since this is a new product, people will be looking for a lot of information on it
  • To make money from this blog, I would add Google AdSense to it because the product might not yet be directly available from affiliate sources.

Follow this approach and you can become an authority site for this product early on in the game.

Today’s Niche Idea: Antique Sewing Machines

Today’s niche site idea combines two really great niches into one; Antiques and sewing. Antique sewing machines are very popular among collectors and sewing enthusiasts, which is why they receive very high amounts of focused traffic from the search engines.

antique sewing machine

This high amount of traffic though, also results in an above average amount of competition for these items. This is not a bad thing overall because a high amount of searches means that a lot of people will have the chance to visit your site if your site.

View all of my Niche Site Tips for some ideas on how you can create a site that will stand up to the competition.

Here are some keyword phrases you can take advantage of in your affiliate campaigns.

  • Antique Sewing Machines
  • Monthly Search Volume: 33,100
  • Competition Level: High
  • Antique White Sewing Machine
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,400
  • Competition Level: Average
  • Antique Sewing Machine Cabinet
  • Monthly Search Volume: 1,300
  • Competition Level: Average

As I mentioned above, the competition for this niche can be high when trying to rank for certain keywords, but this means that the demand is also high. Some great content and a properly structured site should result in a page that ranks rather well.

Today’s Niche Site Tip: Home Page Layout Guidelines

One of the most important parts of starting a niche site, is getting it some attention from the search engines. This can sometimes be pretty frustrating though because of all the “ranking” rules that Google, Yahoo and Bing have, but by following a few simple guidelines on your homepage layout, you should rank well without too many headaches.

This post is based on a situation I found myself in last month with one of my sites. It took a while but I was finally ranking number 1 in all the search engines for the term, “distortion pedal reviews”. (If you didn’t already guess, I have a site that sells these items)

Upon realizing this, I thought it would be a good idea to modify the home page in order to get some more sales, but in return I made some changes that knocked me out of my number 1 spot, and into the deep depths of Google’s index. Not a good idea in the long run. ..

We are going to be using the site I mentioned above as an example: http:www.rockdistortionpedals.com

rank1

Google Ranking

What I did wrong:

  • Decided to monetize the homepage more. I think this conflicted with the primary intent of the site, which is to provide reviews for pedals.
  • I removed approximately 250 words of content to make space for current auctions on EBay for distortion pedals. (This was my main downfall)
  • I added an EBay feed that displayed only around 3 items on sale, but I think it was what kicked me out of the top spot.

Upon realizing what happened, I reverted many of the changes and got the homepage back to the state it was in when it was ranking well. After about a week or so, I was back on top and I had learned my lesson.

Here are a few guidelines that I follow when I am designed my home page which usually helps them rank well.

Home Page Design Tips:

  • Your homepage should directly reflect the overall purpose of your site. Try to keep it clean, professional and relevant to your niche.
  • There should be around 500 words of keyword rich content that provides general information about the “niche” you are marketing.
  • Add visual links, or image links to some of your best product reviews of guides.
  • I like to add a YouTube video in hopes that it will make visitors who hit my home page decide to stick around.
  • Finally, DO NOT add EBay auctions to your homepage.  (This is primarily relevant for those of us who are members of EBay’s Partner Network)

Here is an example of one of my latest sites that implement these guidelines: http://www.hybridgolfironsets.com

Homepage ranking takes patience, and sometimes some experimentation. Hopefully this article has given you some ideas to try out to improve your ranking. It is important to mention though, that without great content on the rest of your site, ranking well will be pretty unattainable.  If you start with the content, then make a homepage that reflects the authority of your information, you’ll have no troubles ranking well.

Today’s Niche Site Tip: Promoting Articles

A lot of people may find find themselves in the same boat that I was in when I started blogging sites dedicated to niches; I was writing good, useful content, but I was not attracting many visitors.

This happens a lot of the time because sites with similar content may have a higher page rank than your newly established sites, and it may be hard to appear before them in the search engines. Below is the process I normally take when I write a new article for one of my sites. It is really just a starting point, as there are many ways to promote your articles, but this method is quick, easy and it works for me.

Following these 6 steps will help get your blog some well deserved attention.

Step 1: Write some Great Content

You want to write informative articles on your site that are related to your niche. This type of content is really what your visitors want, and it is what will keep them coming back.

You can view a detailed post about writing niche site content that I posted a while back here.

Step 2: Submit your Article to Reddit.com

reddit.com.header

Once you sign up for a Reddit account, you’ll be able to post links to them on the site and have thousands of people hopefully check them out. Readers are able to vote your link “up” if it is really good, which will result in more visits.

Reddit also has a high page rank, which means that you’ll get a good backlink from the site.

Step 3: Submit your Article to Digg.com

feature-dialogg

Digg is a lot like Reddit and you’ll experience the same benefits from posting on this site as well.

My “Digg Links” will almost always show up on the front page of Google when searching for a term directly related to my content. These links will re-direct visitors to the whole article on my site.

Step 4: Submit your blog to Zimbio.com

Zimbio is basically a high ranking article source that will post all of the updates on your blog to its site. In my experience, search engines like Zimbio, and a good amount of content I have written appears high in searches because of Zimbio.

Another great thing about Zimbio is that it will update itself automatically when you post new content on your blog.

Step 5: Submit your blog to BlogoWogo.com

This site shares a lot of similarities with Zimbio. It is also an online “blog directory” that will host small samples of your article which link back to your site.

The update process for this site is also automatic, so once you post a new article on your site BlogoWogo will detect it and display an associated post.

Step 6: Submit your blog to BlogCatalog.com

This is a great way to get your blog content some attention. It will add your blog to a community of others so it can also result in some great link exchange opportunities.

BlogCatalog also displays links to all of your content that you add to your site which helps out in the search engines as well.

Today’s Niche Idea: Hybrid Golf Clubs

Today’s niche idea is Hybrid Golf Clubs. Hybrid golf clubs are becoming increasingly popular, and the interest in them is bound to rise once more professionals adopt them. I am not a golfer by any means (tried and few times, and it was not pretty), but what I understand about these clubs is that they are designed to give the golf ball better trajectory.  To wrap it up, their design makes hitting the ball easier.

hybrid iron golf club

As usual, here are some keywords I have researched that you can use to start creating a niche site around this idea.

  • Hybrid Iron Golf Club
  • Monthly Search Volume: 3,600
  • Competition Level: Average
  • Golf Hybrid Sets
  • Monthly Search Volume: 8,100
  • Competition Level: Below Average
  • Best Hybrid Clubs
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,400
  • Competition Level: Below Average

Overall, I think this is a really great niche to get into. With a little work, and marketing you should have no problem carving out your own place in it.

Build Niche Websites Like The Pros

Build Niche Websites Like The Pros

Most of us have built a niche website at some point – a small content based website which includes AdSense and / or affiliate links to make money.

Most of us also never took the “model” seriously.

Well, someone else has now done that for us.

The 2 guys that brought Build A Niche Store (commonly referred to as BANS) to market have spent the last 6 months going over how they make money in this way and have packaged this knowledge up into a new 9 step guide called:

N1WAY

Over the past 4 1/2 years they’ve built hundreds of niche affiliate websites and they’ve helped thousands on that road to success through their development and support of Build A Niche Store.

For under $25 you can now know what they know.

A small price to pay for a “way” that’s enabled them to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past few years.

If you want to know how to “do” niche websites properly check this one out:

N1WAY

Note from the author: I have personally used this product, and cannot say enough good things about it. If I had this when I started, I would be a millionaire by now! Well, maybe not a millionaire, but my first niche site attempts would have performed much better.

The guide provides you with valuable information that covers each step on the niche site building process.

Today’s Niche Idea: Cordless Power Drills

Hi everyone, today’s niche idea is something that no do-it-yourself-er can live without, cordless power drills. These types of drills are great to have around the home, which makes them very high in demand. There are also many different brands and styles to choose from, so you’ll have no problem adding some great reviews and content to your site. Now, let’s take a look at some keywords you can use to take advantage of this niche.

cordless power drill

  • Power Tool Chargers
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,900

  • Monthly Search Volume: 14,800
  • Competition Level:  Average
  • Cordless 18v Drills

Because of the number of products available, I think that if you do some extra research and add some great content, you can dominate a portion of this niche.

Today’s Niche Idea: Bass Fishing

Fishing is a great niche to get into because it supports many sub-niches that can be taken advantage of. Bass fishing is one of the most popular forms of fishing among “weekend warrior” fisherman, which makes it a great starting point for a fishing site.

This would be a great niche opportunity for someone with a passion for fishing. It could expand their knowledge of the sport, while also creating an income on the side.

Every fisherman needs a quality reel, so today we are going to check out some terms you can use to start selling bass fishing reels.

bass fishing reel

  • Bass Reels
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,900
  • Competition Level:  Average
  • Bass Reel
  • Monthly Search Volume: 8,100

  • Bass Pro Reel
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,900
  • Competition Level:  Average
  • Bass Fishing Reel
  • Monthly Search Volume: 2,900
  • Competition Level:  High

This niche has a solid monthly search volume and an average advertiser competition. This means that although this niche might not be easy to dominate, it is achievable with some great content and a well designed web site.

Today’s Niche Tip: Help with Picking your Niche

This step is the most important of the whole niche marketing process. Without a good niche, you’ll effectively be wasting your time building a site around something that you have an impossible chance of being successful at. This is why I devote a lot of time to researching niche trends and competition.

I usually brainstorm niche ideas just by browsing sites like EBay and Amazon, and also by reading through consumer report websites. These are great places to start looking if you’re in a “niche-slump”.

EBay offers a great service called EBay Pulse, which offers information on the most watched items, and the most popular items for each item category in EBay. This is a great way to narrow down your niche ideas. At this point, I’ll usually try to come up with 10 broad niche ideas that I will narrow down in my next step.

An additional word of advice would be to start looking for a niche that is related to something you are either interested in, or could be interested in. This makes the whole process of adding valuable content to your site much easier.

Google’s Keyword Research Tool

Google offers a great keyword research tool that allows you to drill down into specific niche’s and identify competition and search volumes. The best part about this is that it is completely free.

Let’s see how this tool can help you pick a niche:

  • I started by searching for the broad term “Wall Art”
  • Google then returned a large list of related keywords that people are searching for along with their competition ratings, local monthly search volume and global monthly search volume.

key2

  • I worked my way through the list looking for good candidates for a niche site and came across the term wall art sculptures.
  • This term had a below average amount of competition and a decent amount of monthly searches.
  • I then checked out EBay and found that there are a large amount of products available for this niche, so I decided to take the next step and create a site called: Wall Art Sculptures

Just by doing a little bit of niche research before you dive into building a new site makes it possible to rank well with new sites. My site Wall Art Sculptures is a little over 2 months old and is already on page 1 of Google for its main keyword search term.
